Budget Buster: The problem with living forever - Stuff.co.nz Posted: 26 Oct 2019 10:00 AM PDT OPINION: Attempting to achieve immortality by injecting yourself with the blood of the young barely raises an eyebrow in certain Silicon Valley circles. I spent the summer hanging out with a bunch of techno-optimists interested in gene editing, uploading their minds to the internet, and other such heresies. One of their central ideas is that there is no such thing as dying of 'old age'. Death is not an inevitability - it's an unsolved engineering problem! Even if we don't become immortal post-humans in our lifetimes, we're still going to have a pretty good innings. READ MORE: I will expire around the ripe old age of 90, according to the Statistics NZ lifespan calculator. That's a full 20 years longer than if I'd been born a century earlier, and lifespans are still increasing. A baby girl born today could expect to live to 95 - and that's only the average. The Queen (who will surely outlive us all) is going to cop some terrible RSI signing all those centenarian birthday cards. Living for longer is awesome, but it does present a small problem in the department of retirement planning. Traditionally, you might work for 40-45 years, and then spend 10-15 years in retirement. Now we're approaching a tipping point where some people will spend more of their life as retirees than they did as workers. The great risk is running out of money before we run out of life. And unfortunately, our dotage will be expensive: contrary to popular opinion about the public health 'burden' of smokers and fat people, it's the obnoxiously healthy folks who cost an arm and a leg (or a hip and a heart valve) by stubbornly refusing to die. We're going to need more money. But where's it going to come from? SuperannuationIt's unclear whether we can sustain NZ Super as the population ages. Personally, I don't intend to leave my fate in the hands of politicians. Even if superannuation sticks around in its current form, it's a lean existence if you don't have other savings to supplement it. Working longerMy controversial take is that work is good, actually. It's true that some jobs are plain drudgery. But work can also be a rich source of meaning and fulfilment, and new retirees often find themselves with an unexpected void to fill. As a friend of mine says, he wants to die with his boots on. Even working a few extra years past 65 makes a huge difference in building a nest-egg big enough to go the distance. Reverse mortgagesLots of older folks are asset-rich but cash-poor, with most of their wealth tied up in their home. One option is to take out a 'reverse mortgage', in which you free up some of that equity by borrowing against your property. You repay the loan upon death, or voluntarily leaving your home. You can't be kicked out, and if you end up owing more than the house is worth, the loan company wears the loss. The downside is that with no repayments, the compounding interest can quickly consume your biggest asset - which is no good if you want to move, or leave an inheritance for the kids. Reverse mortgages work well in some scenarios, but they're a niche product. AnnuitiesAn annuity allows you to invest a lump sum, and receive a guaranteed income every year until you die. The fees are steep, but if you live longer than the insurer planned for, you win. Annuities barely existed in New Zealand until recently, which is good, because they were mostly terrible products. But now there's a new breed of much more intriguing 'variable' annuities available. There's been talk of funnelling KiwiSaver funds into a government-backed annuity, and one provider, Simplicity, already offers an income-guaranteed fund. Annuities are a bit complicated, but worthy of closer inspection. Tune in next week, and we'll look at whether they might help finance our increasingly long retirements. Got a burning money question?
