It's official—Orlando Pride soccer star Ali Krieger and goalie Ashlyn Harris are married! The two said their vows at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Miami last night. They were together for nine years before becoming engaged. "I actually bought her ring three years ago," Ashlyn says at the Thom Browne showroom in New York, where she's getting fitted for her tuxedo about a month ahead of the wedding. "I knew I wanted to marry her, but I didn't want it to be a traditional, conforming next step. I didn't want to feel like I just had to do it because that's what was next, so it took me a while to come to terms with what marriage looked like for us. I think it should be unique to each couple, and Ali and I spent a lot of time discussing what principles we wanted to align with and guide our way through life because it's so challenging, and we wanted to do it once, and we want to do right by each other."

Once they unpacked their feelings, Ashlyn felt like she was constantly waiting for the right moment to propose. "It was hard because I didn't want to disappoint her," she says. "I wanted it to be this spectacular thing. But I wanted to do it in a way that was true to us, not cheesy, or like an over the top things flying in the sky kind of thing."

The moment ended up arriving while the couple were having a weekend away at Clearwater Beach last year. One evening they went out for dinner and a walk on the beach. "I would actually carry the ring around with me," Ashlyn admits. "I really wanted to feel the moment." Ali asked for a photo with the Florida sunset, and ushered Ashlyn into the frame. "She was like, 'Get in it—I want to take a picture together,'" Ashlyn remembers. "I pulled the ring out of my pocket, and she's taking this selfie of us, and I just held it in the selfie that we were taking. She said, 'Stop, what are you doing? Put your hand down!' and then she saw the ring. It was such an incredible moment. We were crying and laughing, and it was just so personal to us. It was a great way to finish a wonderful weekend together. It was so simple, but so right in the moment."

From the location to their wardrobe, the couple wanted the wedding to feel similarly. "I think weddings can look super cheesy," Ashlyn says. "Sometimes I feel like stuff is just thrown everywhere to make it white and there's things hanging, and flowers everywhere—it gives me a little anxiety." She wanted the venue—with its formal gardens and Italian Renaissance architecture—to speak for itself. "There's not much you need to add to it. There's so much beauty in and of itself, and it's right on the water, so it was a fit for us."

Her wedding day look communicated the same authentic vibe. "Thom Browne dresses the Barcelona soccer team, and that's kind of how I first started seeing his stuff," Ashlyn explains. "I had purchased a few different items, and I researched his background and found out that he was an athlete. He was a swimmer and part of the LGBTQ community and an American-based designer—all of the things that I look for when wearing clothes. Honestly, I loved that it was very gender neutral, very fluid, there were women in dresses and men in dresses, and men and women in skirts. I can really feel how he expresses himself through clothes, it's just so non-conforming and so far out, and I've been wearing his stuff ever since."

For the ceremony, Ashlyn chose a black silk faille tuxedo with an organza and beaded overlay in an argyle pattern. The jacket was a classic double-breasted silhouette, paired with trousers and a vest—similar to the sheer black tux she wore to the ESPYs earlier this year. "We were like how do we re-create that moment in a more refined way?" Ashlyn says. "That was the starting point with Thom."

"I like dressing Ashlyn because she represents everything that inspires me in a person...she's true to herself and she is the best at what she does," Thom explains. "I think we are a good pairing because I think we truly understand one another. I wanted her to feel like the beautiful, inspiring, and unique superstar that she is."

Ali wore Pronovias—they dressed the family and the bridesmaids as well—but beyond that, Ashlyn was in the dark as to what the gown might look like ahead of the wedding. The one thing she knew for sure in advance of the wedding weekend was that she was most looking forward to having everyone in the same room. "When we say our vows, this is forever and this means so much to us, so we want the people who have helped us and gotten us to where we are to be there and to be able to see us living our authentic selves and living our truth, but also be able to hold us accountable," Ashlyn reflects. "You know we miss so much, doing what we do. We miss birthdays, and we miss weddings, it's just finally a moment—it will probably be the first and last—when we're all together celebrating so much, our relationship, our love, and our future. I think that's going to be the best part of the whole thing."
