Jane Fonda Reveals Details of Dolly Parton's 'Grace and Frankie' Cameo—and We Can't Wait - Prevention Magazine
- Jane Fonda teased Dolly Parton's Grace and Frankie season 7 cameo.
- The series' final episodes drop on Netflix Friday.
- Fonda said the Queen of Country's appearance will "knock your socks off."
What has felt like a dream for years is finally becoming reality. The final episodes of Grace and Frankie hit Netflix on Friday, and none other than the Queen of Country herself, Dolly Parton, will grace our screens as a part of them. Stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin have remained tight-lipped about exactly how Parton joins the story, but it's hard not to picture the "Jolene" singer strutting into the Hanson-Bergstein beach house like she owns the place.
Whatever role Parton plays, it's going to "knock your socks off," according to Fonda. She and Tomlin teased the cameo while discussing the series' final lap on The Late Late Show with James Corden, and Fonda hinted that Parton helps the show wrap up in a "beautiful" way.
"The way it ends," Fonda said with a smile. Tomlin reared back in her chair and clapped, letting out an excited: "Oh, God!" Fonda continued: "Dolly joins us, OK, Dolly Parton. But it's not just that Dolly joins us. It's the way that she is brought into the story will knock your socks off." As if we haven't already been anxiously waiting for the final episodes to drop!

In case you need a plot refresher, part one of season 7 (which was released in August 2021) followed a panicked Grace and Frankie as they attempted to launder hundreds of thousands of dollars that Grace's new husband, Nick, hid in his couch before the FBI showed up to arrest him for tax evasion. Meanwhile, the pair's ex-husbands Robert and Sol (who are now married) are temporarily crashing at the beach house after Grace and Frankie's latest invention, The Rise Up toilet seat, flooded their house.
With such a chaotic storyline, there are endless ways Parton might join the picture. But in her true nature, it sounds like she will make us laugh and pull at our heartstrings at the same time. "It is so beautiful and so moving and unique," Fonda said of the Queen of Country's part. "I'm just thrilled with it." She turned to Tomlin and asked, "Aren't you?" and she nodded and clapped enthusiastically.
This iconic 9 to 5 reunion has been a long time coming. Fonda and Tomlin have talked about it for years, and Parton herself has always wanted it. It was just a matter of timing it right, and then the pandemic happened.
"I've been trying to do Grace and Frankie for years," Parton said on Lorraine in February of last year. "We worked so well together on 9 to 5, it's a crazy wonderful show." She continued: "We've been trying to write me in somehow. So when it's safe for us to actually do a production when they're back, I'll probably get around to doing that."
Thankfully, she did. And before filming restrictions were lifted, there was even discussion of Parton joining remotely. "We've got a great role for her this time. I think she will do it. I'm just hoping she will," Tomlin told Today last January. "And we hope she can do it and we think she can do it by remote."
If we're lucky, the "Islands in the Stream" singer ended up on-set, but either way, it's bound to be an unforgettable performance. We have the popcorn (and let's be honest, the tissues) ready.
