Last week, my colleague Maggie Penman wrote about what keeps long marriages happy. She interviewed experts — relationship researchers and couples who have been together for decades — and a few key themes stood out: gratitude, humor, shared purpose and learning how to fight fairly.
One couple said it is, contrary to popular wisdom, okay to go to bed angry — sometimes taking a pause to cool off and return to the conversation is healthier than hashing it out in the moment. Another couple said it’s important to thank one another, including for the small things like unloading the dishwasher and walking the dog. Couples who express gratitude tend to stay more connected.
