Grand Rapids Lantern Festival 2024 Tickets Go On Sale Next Week

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — After a wildly successful first year, the Grand Rapids Lantern Festival is returning this spring at John Ball Zoo.

General admission tickets will go on sale for the Lantern Festival on Monday, Feb. 5.

According to John Ball Zoo, more than 110,000 guests enjoyed the nature-inspired Asian lantern festival last year, with most nights selling out. The event was twice as popular as zoo officials expected.

This year's lantern festival will take place 7:30-11:30 p.M. On Wednesdays through Sundays at the Grand Rapids zoo, starting April 10 and running through June 16.

The Lantern Festival is a one-mile tour through parts of John Ball Zoo, illuminated by dozens of handmade lanterns.

One of the new features of the 2024 Lantern Festival will embrace the Chinese zodiac Year of the Dragon, with a large dragon tunnel greeting visitors at the front of the zoo.

"After an incredibly fun and successful lantern festival in 2023, we are so excited to welcome people of all ages back for an even bigger and better event the second time around," said Darci Napolillo, John Ball Zoo promotions and events manager. "The Grand Rapids Lantern Festival offers an amazing opportunity to learn about Asian culture and its ties to wildlife conservation, and is one guests won't want to miss."

Last year, Napolillo told MLive/The Grand Rapids Press it's likely some Lantern Festival dates for 2024 will sell out soon after ticket sales go live.

Along with new lantern displays, the company behind the artistic lanterns, Tianyu Arts & Culture, will add traditional performances this year including artistic hula hooping, acrobatics and face changing.

Timed tickets will be sold every half hour from 7-10:30 p.M. For the festival experience. Tickets cost $22 for non-zoo members on Wednesday and Thursday, and $24 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday dates. Tickets have been on sale for zoo members since Jan. 8, for $19 for an individual Wednesday or Thursday ticket and $21 for weekend nights.

If purchasing four tickets for four people on the same night, John Ball Zoo is selling four passes at a lower price. Non-members can purchase a four-pass on a weeknight for $70, or $17.50 each, or $75 on a weekend, which is $18.75 for each ticket.

No student, senior or military discounts are offered on Grand Rapids Lantern Festival tickets, but children 2 and under get in free.

Tickets can be purchased online at jbzoo.Org/events/lanternfestival.

Last year, dozens of lantern displays at the zoo included a giant butterfly tree, a variety of underwater critters, hippos, tigers and several floral lantern tunnels.

During the Lantern Festival, John Ball Zoo served themed foods and sold special merchandise. Foods included barbecue pork bao buns, pot stickers, egg rolls, wonton nachos, ice cream wonton nachos and hazelnut chocolate dessert bao buns.

The Lantern Festival operates rain or shine and takes about an hour to an hour and a half to walk through the route.
